The sweltering summer months continue in the northern hemisphere. Among the nutritional strategies researchers have examined to minimize the effects of hot weather, taurine has gained more eyeballs. Is this supplement the answer to racing in hot weather?

What is Taurine?

Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid. It is often described as a conditionally essential amino acid because although the body can synthesize it from the amino acids cysteine and methionine. Meat, fish, and dairy are good sources. Taurine plays a role in a number of metabolic and physiological processes, such as glucose and lipid regulation, energy metabolism, and anti-inflammatory processes. It’s especially abundant in skeletal muscle, where intracellular concentrations run higher than concentrations in plasma.

Heat Research

Of particular interest to heat researchers, taurine also appears to influence the sweating response, a mechanism believed to help explain much of what has been observed in thermoregulation studies, although the exact pathway connecting taurine to sweat gland activity is not fully understood.  The leading hypothesis involves taurine’s action on the hypothalamus, the brain’s thermoregulatory control center. Taurine can activate glycine and GABA_A receptors, inhibitory neurotransmitter systems that may influence the threshold for sweat responses.

Research on taurine and heat has grown substantially in recent years and generally supports a thermoregulatory benefit, though not all studies are uniformly positive. In one study, a single 50 milligram per kilogram dose of taurine, taken two hours before cycling to exhaustion in the heat, increased local sweat rate, decreased core temperature in the final portion of the test, lowered perceived exertion, and reduced post-exercise blood lactate alongside the 10 percent improvement in time to exhaustion (1). A follow-up trial examined a loading protocol rather than a single dose, giving participants 50 milligrams per kilogram of taurine daily for eight days before a walking test in 37.5 degrees Celsius heat with progressively increasing humidity. That loading protocol increased whole-body sweat loss and sweat gland activation, enhanced evaporative heat loss, and delayed the point at which the body's cooling mechanisms became overwhelmed by the rising humidity (2). A more recent 2026 trial looked at repeated sprint performance following exhaustive exercise in a hot, humid environment and found that taurine supplementation, at doses of 1, 4, or 6 grams, reduced the decline in power output across repeated sprints and extended time to exhaustion relative to placebo (3).

However, not every study reaches the same conclusion. A study testing taurine combined with caffeine before cycling in the heat found no ergogenic benefit and only minimal effects on thermoregulation (4).  A 2021 meta-analysis on taurine also noted that relatively few controlled trials have examined taurine specifically in hot conditions and called for further research to corroborate the pattern before it can be considered well established (5).

Sex Specific Effects

Because much of the taurine and heat research to date has used male-only or predominantly male samples, direct evidence on sex differences in heat is limited. The study above, which tested taurine's effect on repeated-sprint performance following exhaustive exercise, tested both men and women (3). Using the same protocol, they found that men and women performed optimally to different doses. Male participants responded best at the highest dose tested, 6 grams of taurine, while female participants achieved better results at a much lower dose, 1 gram, with time to exhaustion improving most at a moderate dose of 4 grams and showing no added benefit from the highest dose. The study's authors proposed that these differences might relate to body composition, hormonal differences, or baseline taurine metabolism between men and women.

 Notably, sample sizes were small, eight men and eight women, and the findings should be treated as exploratory. Other taurine studies only included a small number of female participants and were not designed or powered to detect sex differences in sweating or core temperature responses. Taken together, the limited evidence available suggests that women exercising in the heat may not need, and may not benefit from, the higher taurine doses that appear most effective in men, though more sex specific research is needed.

Supplement Dose and Safety

Taurine carries Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status for use in foods in the United States. However, given its interaction with some medications, athletes should discuss use with their healthcare team. The research points toward two potential uses in hot weather: a single dose in the range of 1 to 6 grams, or roughly 50 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, taken one to two hours before exercise, or a loading protocol of the same daily dose taken for about a week leading into a hot weather event.

It is worth being clear that taurine won’t work as a replacement for other heat management strategies. Heat acclimatization in the days or weeks before an event will give more benefit than any supplement ever could. Likewise, adequate fluid and carb intake and appropriate pacing remain the foundation of performing well in hot conditions, and taurine should be considered a possible benefit to those practices rather than a replacement for any of them.

The Real Reason We Don’t Recommend Taurine

There are limited options for third-party-tested taurine supplements. The NSF Certified for Sport currently certifies relatively few products in which taurine is the standalone or primary active ingredient. Taurine more commonly appears in energy drinks or as a supporting ingredient in larger NSF Certified for Sport formulations focused on heat and hydration, such as certain electrolyte capsules and “pre-workout” or endurance powders. Athletes will have a hard time finding a single-ingredient taurine product with NSF Certified for Sport verification. Until that is the case, it’s difficult to recommend its use. However, the certified product listings change over time as manufacturers submit new formulations for testing.

Bottom Line

Of course, all athletes would like to be able to manage the heat more effectively, and taurine's case for hot weather performance is intriguing. The mechanism is plausible, several small trials show some improvements in sweating capacity and heat tolerance. But intriguing research and a recommendable supplement are two different things. Until there is a taurine-only product carrying NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport certification, and until more research clarifies dosing for both men and women, taurine remains a compound to watch rather than a “must-add” to a race-day plan. Athletes preparing for a hot weather event will get more reliable returns from heat acclimatization, a solid fluid and carbohydrate strategy, and smart pacing, the fundamentals that already have strong, consistent evidence behind them. We'll keep an eye on the taurine research, and will revisit this recommendation as it develops.
